Analytic Tables

Analytic tables present detailed estimates of mental health and substance abuse (MH/SA) prevalence, service utilization, and payments in Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance. Estimates also are presented for other medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, HIV/AIDS, mental retardation, and potentially alcohol-related disorders, as well as a random sample of claimants.

  • A brief set of Overview tables presents basic counts and prevalence estimates of claimants in each data source. Overview tables date from 1994.
  • Detailed Medicare estimates are from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS') national 5% Sample Standard Analytic Files (SAF). Medicare estimates date from 1995.
  • Detailed Medicaid estimates are from CMS' State Medicaid Research Files (SMRF) through 1998 and from CMS' Medicaid Analytic Extract (MAX), which replaced SMRF, for 1999 to present. Medicaid estimates are presented for four states: Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington. Estimates date from 1994.
  • Detailed Private Sector insurance estimates are from Thomson Medstat's national MarketScan database. Private Sector estimates date from 1995.

Additional years of analytic tables will be posted as they become available.
